The event, to be held May 21, 2023 raises funds for a medical student scholarship.
On 21st May 2023 (Sunday) one of the most attractive running races in the country will take place — Pleven Friendship Marathon. The ninth edition of the event offers a wide range of disciplines — from 3 to 42.2 km, children’s Fun Run Kids race, free urban cross and outdoor games Park+.
Keeping the tradition of going beyond the sport, the ninth marathon in Pleven has a charitable cause once again. This year it aims to provide a scholarship for a student at the Medical University of Pleven, part of foundation BCause’s ‘Get Ready for Success’ campaign. The aid is intended for a student with excellent grades who has lost one or both of their parents or grew up in a specialized institution. The initiative builds on the cause of the 2019 event when, again as part of ‘Get Ready for Success’, a scholarship was provided for a medical student who is now a qualified doctor and one of the people who graduated with the highest grades in their class.
By the ninth edition of the Pleven Friendship Marathon we decided to help and together raise funds for a scholarship for a student at the Medical University, Pleven. We want to support a future doctor — a young person who has chosen learning as their path to success and the vocation to help’,
says Stanimira Georgieva from Eyes-Open, co-organizer of the event.
The charity can be supported by anyone wishing to make a donation.
Besides continuing to help noble causes, the marathon in Pleven is expected to encourage more people to turn to an active lifestyle. The event is held in a format that attracts both experienced marathoners and novice runners of all ages. Participants have a wide choice of six main disciplines — classic marathon (42.2 km), half-marathon (21.1 km), relay (2 x 10.5 km), the popular 10 km, as well as the children’s Fun Run Kids race divided by age groups as well as the 3 km ‘I Can’ mass cross.
With its eight editions, over the years the Friendship Marathon has developed not only as a competition for established athletes, but also as a family event, provoking people of a wide age range to take part in sports. The youngest participant so far is only 2 years old and the oldest, who has successfully run the challenging distance of 42.2 km — 85 years old.
Registration for the event is now open on the website plevenmarathon.com and has Early Bird discounted fees up to and including March 8th. The organizers offer free registration for the children who join the Fun Run Kids, for all participants in the 3-kilometre ‘I Can’ mass cross, for people with disabilities, as well as for veterans over the age of 60.
The ninth marathon in Pleven is organized by leading foundations and social enterprises in Bulgaria whose main mission is to support people with different abilities and disadvantages: Maria’s World Foundation, the Social Future —Jamba Foundation, Eyes–Open, National Alliance for Social Responsibility, in partnership with Pleven Municipality, SC Elite Running from Romania, Bulgarian Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, BCause Foundation, Autism Today. The event is held with the support of many companies for which corporate and social responsibility, contribution to building a fair social environment and a sustainable future are at the core of their business.
